Erhard Junghans founded the company in Schramberg in 1861, and around 1903 it was described as the largest watch and clock factory in the world. From the 1950s it worked with Bauhaus-trained designer Max Bill, whose models remain among its best sellers. It was official timekeeper for the 1972 Munich Olympics and launched the MEGA 1 radio-controlled wristwatch in 1990. After the 2008 bankruptcy, Hans-Jochem Steim bought the house.
